Blog #5  from the series, “Light” from the Black Forest

Today’s guest blogger is Tom Allen, Professor of Bible at Cairn University, Langhorne, PA and Pastor of Bible Fellowship Church, Yardley, PA

As I reflect on my time in Kandern, Germany this summer, a single word captures it best-

edification

The word means to “build up”. It is something that Christians are to consciously pursue. We are called to dispense edification and to receive it. We need it. Other believers need it. The Holy Spirit accomplishes it.  Here are…

Blog #4  from the series, “Light” from the Black Forest

Today’s guest blogger is Tammy Allen, Middle School Educator in Pennsbury School District in PA

surprise partyGod gave me a surprise party this summer.  I was invited to direct Cairn University’s Germany campus for five weeks this summer. Basically, this meant helping the professors and international students during the five weeks of classes that are held in a little village just north of Basel, Switzerland – Kandern, Germany.

After a little deliberation with my family and some ‘thank…

Over the course of the past four weeks I have frequently found myself at a loss for words as my mind struggles to process and apprehend the splendor of God’s majesty embedded in the sights and sounds around me.  Outside America for the first time, I am wrapping up this once in a lifetime opportunity to complete the remaining coursework for teaching certification and to take in Germany, France, and Switzerland over the…

Oneness

7.6.14 Interlaken

Perched on the deck of our lodge high above the still waters of Lake Thun, I breathed in the calming presence of God’s creation as I stood encircled in the glorious majesty of the Swiss Alps.  A continuation, another side perhaps, of the peace that had settled over me the evening before in worship.  Oneness.

At the end of an intense week of teaching at Cairn University’s international…

Like a Tree Firmly Planted

July 10, 2014

Many of you have been watching the pictures I have been posting on Facebook during my three week stay in Kandern, Germany.  You have taken the time to “like” and in some cases “comment” on the photos that have included jaunts to the Alsace, Switzerland, and Germany.  You have witnessed what Tom, Tammy, and Jordan Allen, Dianne Alexander, and Sheryl Vasso have seen and eaten!  You haven’t seen us in the classroom much, but truly we all have been teaching and/or studying during these weeks.  We are grateful to you for sharing in our joy and now our journey…

News is Toxic

July 20, 2013

World newsOne of the occupational hazards of being a professor is that every summer I HAVE to teach overseas in places like Germany, Thailand, Hong Kong or Brazil. I know! I know! It’s a tough job but someone has to do it, right? And weekends are tougher when I take a short drive from Germany to the Alsace or to one of my favorite countries, Switzerland.

While that may all sound idyllic, there is a down side to travel in foreign countries and that is finding a television station that is in…

How Will You Move Forward?

October 5, 2012

For several years, I have been fond of saying that I keep a “5K” in my back pocket. Now I certainly don’t mean I keep five thousand dollars there. My “5K” is a reference to running not money.

In 2008, my husband and I ran the New York City Marathon. Unless a miracle occurs, it was our first and last long race. Maybe it was more of a “bucket list” thing than we realized. But since then, I have continued to run. …

Why is there a Bucket in my Shower?

August 25, 2012

I’m pretty sure I drove my mother crazy as a child asking questions.  (Mom, would you care to comment here?)  I’m actually certain of this fact because many times when my own children were busy driving me to distraction with their “Why’s??” my mom would smile and say that I was “paying for my raising”!    To be honest, I’m still guilty of asking questions; I’m naturally curious although I thought I had outgrown the tendency to ask too many questions.  Then I went to India.

Oh my!  The questions that…

Lost in Translation?

August 5, 2010

Lost in translation?

Cammy and I just returned from Europe where we had the opportunity to teach and encourage teachers from literally around the world.  Fortunately for us, we didn’t need a translator as all the “students” spoke and understood English.

However, our home away from home was located in the Southwest corner of Germany, in the Black Forest where the people in the beautiful village, while fairly fluent in English, spoke many languages—German, Italian, Spanish, French, and Chinese. Everyday we heard diverse languages and dialects as we journeyed not…
